Having moved over nineteen times across Asia, Europe, and North America, diasporic experiences have deeply influenced my practice. I explore the ambiguity inherent in so-called truth, faith, and boundaries.
Self-portrait, yet non-self-portrait, the works are vessels for a transversal sensorium, queerness and motherhood. Through the ghost-like paintings – where fragmented figures are bathed in dramatic light and subtle shadows, I aim to blur the thresholds across space, between objects, and from within the sociality of human bodies; physicality and metaphysicality; functionality and malfunctionality.
The ontological encounter that I experienced during a dawn conversation with my mother, who was a Buddhist nun before marriage, led me to hope my work to be a thing for someone to truly witness. It is about an out-focusing on possibilities, independence from one's own common sense, an escape from responsibility and expectation, and facing each other's heavy gravity bare-faced.
Thin yet multi-layered paintings blend personal/ cultural memories with dreamlike scenery, oscillating between reality and Atopia – a place that is moored to nowhere.
